An Idea

As I complained in the comments of a previous post, aside from things like joining Facebook groups and online petitions, there's little pressure those of us can bring to bear outside the UK to save paleography at King's College London.

One thing we can do, however, is create a visual image. If enough of us make images like this, it just might have an effect.

  1. I think you missed an opportunity there. You should have written the sign in English Caroline Minuscule. Then maybe they'd see the usefulness of having a paleographer around.

English Caroline way too easy! Half in Secretary for the modernists and half in Carolingian chancery cursive! Though I freely admit that I can't read one of these or write either so it's a bit much to expect it of anyone else.

I can't help noticing that the international importance of the subject is brought home by the US spelling being different from Bischoff, Ganz and Ó Cróinin's :-) And, excellent thought to include something Prof. Ganz helped to be in the picture!

  3. Or better: Luxiuel miniscule, aka the maggi noodles script. My signature is based on that: it's pretty well unreproducable. Especially the 'tri' ligature in my surname.

I think you should have a malnourished grad student holding the sign. It will be more moving to the masses.

  5. Writing a letter is another excellent way to make a stand and the more physical letters the better. Write from your home institutions, headed notepaper, in whatever language you feel comfortable. The more varied the better. State politely the reasons you feel the Chair should be kept and how far-reaching this teaching and research is in our field. For wording, address etc, go to the Facebook page.
