Added Links

Just wanted to point out that I added two links to the blogroll today. One is A Memorable Fancy from Erik Marshall, a colleague from grad school who seems to be blogging on new media and film stuff.

The other is Gypsy Scholar by Horace Jeffery Hodges, whom I don't know but I primarily included because I suspect he is the only other non-Korean medievalist who speaks Korean. Perhaps we should start a very, very small club.

  1. Thanks for the link, and I'm pleased to meet you.

I'm afraid that your little club of non-Korean medievalists who speak Korean will have to stay rather small for a while longer, for I don't speak much Korean . . . yet.

My children are fluent, however, and my Korean wife is trilingual in Korean, German, and English (and workng on Japanese and Chinese). But she's not a non-Korean medievalist -- nor a medievalist of any sort. Her Ph.D. is in modern German literature.

How is it that you speak Korean?

  2. I can point you towards a Scandinavian Folklore specialist who also does Korean folklore, and is fluent--not, technically, a medievalist, but since he also did Old Norse he deserves at least an honorary Medievalist status.

  3. I feel obliged to point out that I've not lived in Korea for about ten years now, so the rust is very thick on my Korean language skills. Since she works in the area, I'd bet that my Korean stumbling isn't even in the same league with your folklorist.

As to Prof. Hodges's question, I lived in Korea in the early 1990's (Pusan and Taegu), Mrs. Nokes is Korean, and I still keep regular contact with MEMESAK (Medieval and Early Modern English Studies Association of Korea).

hey nokes! just discovered your blog through referrer stats on mine, and i was your 1300th visitor. Do I get some sort of prize?

I have added you to my bloglines account, which might be an easier way than email for some people to keep track of you (in case you don't know, the url for your RSS feed is http://unlocked-wordhoard.blogspot.com/atom.xml)

  5. See Erik, this is just how much of a techno-rube I am: I don't even understand what your second paragraph *means*!

As for winning a prize, I promise never to post embarrassing grad school photos of you in a compromising position with one Pierre Mourier.

i was wondering about those photos...

Some say RSS stands for "Really Simple Syndication," and your blog has it. It just allows people to keep abreast of your posting. If you go to http://www.bloglines.com/public/emarsh you will see all the blogs I subsribe to. go to "Interesting People" and you will find your blog, and the fact that 7 other people also subscribe to it. When you post, a the title of your blog is bold and tells me how many posts I haven't read. Pretty cool, huh?
