The Best Medievalist News -- EVER!!!

Here is the best possible news for medievalists. Oh, Boethius, who needs the consolation of philosophy when you've got mead to console you?

  1. OMG, this is so funny. A few hours ago, before reading this post, I had the following conversation with my man Bullock:

B: So according to Slate, mead is the hot new drink of the moment.
    Me: Um, new..?
    B: Well, new to Slate.
Me: Hm. Well, that should make medievalists everywhere happy...Especially Anglo-Saxonists...I bet Richard Scott Nokes will be delighted. In fact, I bet he posts about this.

I *swear* to you I am not making this up!

Hm. The Slate article had me up until the second half, when the writer felt the need to describe mead's die-hard fan base of SCA members and Dungeons and Dragons players as a less-than-commercially-viable consumer population. Which probably is true, but he then follows with this: "While it's theoretically possible for mead to escape its poor company..." At which point, I decided to escape his poor company!

Weird. A few years ago, I pitched an article about the increase in professional meaderies in the U.S. to the Food sections of several newspapers, all of which thought the idea was a bit silly. Perhaps I ought to try again...
