Bow Down before Me, Mortals!

I received my letter today granting me tenure and promoting me to associate professor as of August 1st.

Starting tomorrow, I plan to come to work every day drunk, wear nothing but a speedo, and enforce classroom discipline with an aluminum baseball bat. Muhahahaha!

I was just browsing and found your blog: congratulations on the promotion. It's nice to hear about someone doing well on the medieval history job-front - recently i've been hearing so much negative press (in the UK) about the lack of jobs and opportunities in the profession.

  3. Wonderful news! Congrats from all of us non-medievalist lurkers!

In the speedo-only scenario, does that actually mean no bow tie?

  5. Congratulations on tenure and the promotion.

Perhaps you should wait until August for the change in wardrobe though.

It should be reliably warm enough at that time of the year.

    Excellent news!! Congratulations!

You are now, in the brilliant words of Lisa Weston, "totally bleeping fireproof." Enjoy!

  22. Even better. You can now run your classroom as Andre Marek, from the book Timeline (avoid the movie...though Gerard Butler is still good as Marek), would.

    1) All students must attempt to live as a person in the Middle Ages would have lived.

    2) All students must learn to forge armor, weapons, and tools.

    3) All assignments must be turned in in Classical Latin. All classroom discussion must be in Occitan, Old English, or Old German. Various Gaelic languages get partial credit.

    4) The semester ends with several festive events.
    a) The Grand Tourney where students can enter the Lists.
    b) The Hermeneutics writing competition (real, not modern, Hermeneutics).
    c) The Weaving competition.
    d) Alchemy -- the student who can transform lead into gold acquires a permanent A in all Medieval Studies classes.

Haha, you in a speedo. Your humor never seems to wear off. You can thank me later for the promotion.

  24. Fantastic news! Congratulations!

In re: the Speedo, all that does is give me greater incentive to get to work early so as to avoid awkward parking lot encounters.
