Jeff Sypeck has a link-filled post about the medieval and pre-medieval roots of the current Russian/Georgian conflict, including an Arthurian connection I had no clue existed.

Him se yldesta andswarode; werodes wisa, wordhord onleac. "That noblest of men answered him; the leader of the warrior band unlocked his wordhoard."
Thanks for the link! You probably have come across the Alan/Arthur connection before and didn't know it, because the Alans were related to, and often conflated with, the Sarmatians. The Sarmatian/Arthur theory was the basis for that silly King Arthur movie a few years back. Bachrach kicks around the idea for eight pages but doesn't fully commit to it, which strikes me as wise.
